I’m a do-it-yourselfer so I only caulk occasionally. I was able to get smooth, even edges with very little effort. Granted if you do this all the time, you could do it faster with just a finger but for me, this helped me get professional results.

The rubber scrapers are usefull in certain situations – straight lines/wide gaps are easiest. Most times, the finger is still the best tool.
