Yes - American Made, dependable

I have used the Mantis for the last 10 years. It is dependable and makes preparing the soil for my garden less of a physical ordeal. I use it to mix peat, cow manure, topsoil and compost with my soil to prepare my beds for planting every spring. It,s the kind of tool you wouldn’t think you would need, but once you own it, you use it all the time.

No - Maintenance Nightmare

I recently received my new Mantis XP tiller. Assembly was a breeze and using it was fairly easy. It did have a few problems trying to bite into our clay soil, but once in, it chewed through the dirt rather impressively.

Now the reason I may return my tiller within the 1 year period. According to the owners manual, I am to use Lithium grease #0 on the worm gear housing, applied via a grease gun. Sounds simple enough and the application is, or rather would be, if I could actually find Lithium grease # 0 in any store.

Although Mantis sells the grease, they do not sell it in a grease gun cartridge. They only sell small tubes for use in the smaller tillers.

To me, this appears to be a drastic oversight on the part of the Mantis design team.

When I inquired with their support team I was told I MUST apply the grease via a grease gun and not directly to the housing.

To date I have checked Home Depot, Ace Hardware, Auto Zone, Napa, Car Quest, and a local department store. Even a Google search found no lithium #0 grease, unless I want to buy a 50 gal drum (a bit overkill for my garden). I will continue my search, hopefully before my 10 hour service period arrives.

I am not very pleased and caution against anyone who may be interested in this tiller.

I have no arm strength. I have MD red clay soil. WOW, I made a garden! I also have used it to dig a drainage trench for a Patio, along the edge. I forgot to use the edger attachment instead of the regular blades.

The blades got torn up. I sent them to Mantis and as promised under their guarantee, no questions asked, they REPLACED my main blades!!!

This is such a versatile unit, I’m still in love with it after 6-7 years or so of owning it!

Yes - Depends on Your Soil

When we lived in the Nashville area, I tore out several hundred feet of lawn and tilled dozens of bales of peat and compost into the soil prior to putting in plants. This little tiller did a fine job, handled the clay soil like a champ and was easy for me to handle. Now that we live in Las Vegas, the rocks would probably turn into missiles and I doubt the Mantis would be able to make a dent in the contractor compacted soils we have. I paid a lot of money for this machine, but it probably saved me twice that had I hired someone to do the job. It’s small enough to be able to use to weed between crop rows, and in between shrubs as maintenance. I’d buy one again if I lived in the right area.
