Does Magic Jack Really Work?
Magic Jack is a computer peripheral USB device that users may use to make phone calls over the internet. The USB device permits attachment to a traditional landline phone or fax machine. The actual device is plug and play, easily installed, and supposedly requires little or no configuration. MagicJack is said to include support for call waiting, voice mail messages (to be delivered via email), and caller ID. Users are to be assigned a phone number of choice, and they may use the system to make local and international phone calls for a small fee. Magic Jack comes with software that must be installed on a computer before use.

Magic Jack Reviews

If you are from a foreign country trying to contact someone from the US, then the Magic Jack might be worth the risk. To most people who do international calling, bad connections happen all the time and aren’t a huge deal when you compare the cost of international calls to the Magic Jack’s one time 5 yr price. If you are able to get in a few calls for several weeks before this product starts to malfunction, then the temporary service will have made up for the cost of this product.
Unfortunately, for the family friends that have purchased at least 2 jacks or more and for my own mother who purchased 3…it was a BIG RIP OFF!!!
Not only did we experience the same exact problems as the people mentioned above, but my mom was charged for the Magic Jack 4 additional times. They cut off our “5 yr service” after 2 months of sub par connection and usage. We tried to ask the company to resolve the problem, and we went through all the menus that the customer reps told us to go through(when we finally got a hold of a rep through chat after a dozen attempts and several hours).
After trying to fix the situation, they charged us..over and over again. My mom did not know until she received her statements. What’s worse…they aren’t refunding JACK!!!!
Terrible product, terrible customer service, terrible crackly connections, you miss important calls, and you can’t make calls. The only reason I gave the product a 2 was because it sometimes worked for 2 months until it worked no more.
The only Magic about this product is that your money disappears along with the disappearing service and disappearing customer service agents.
Save your money and use Skype. Don’t use this as your primary phone…ever.

You get what you pay for but in this case you get back a bit more. Compare what this service does for you in relation to the price and then think about your cell phone and land line bills. Calls from Iraq to Kansas are just like calling from Georgia to Utah and costs the same and it worked on our slow satellite internet service! If you feel like you need the security of 911 and recieving calls 24/7 without your computer running all the time then this product is not for you as a direct replacement for traditional phone service.

I have had the MJ for about 18 months. In that time I have worked out the kinks but I am unable to make local calls. I have contacted the online helpdesk on 4 occasions over 4 weeks only to be told they are working on it with top priority.

First you in order to have your computer on if you want phone service which means either your computer is running 24/7 (costing computer problems instead of a phone bill) or you have no phone when the computer is turned off. So if something happens in the middle of the night there is no way to call 911 unless your computer is on. I had my computer running 24/7 for a while until it started acting up & would cost me more in the end than having a phone bill. I had bought 2 magic jacks both with 5 year agreements because I knew my son would be going to college soon & might need one. After 2 years they cut service to one of my jacks & said their engineers were working on it…that was in October & it is now March. I had to file a complaint with the FCC because they refused to refund even the service agreement price. The second magic jack had so many problems because it was the one used most often. Finally they kept having me unplug it & plug it back in to the point where the connector came right out of the jack staying in my computer. So I have 1 that is broke & still have 3 years of agreement on it & another that is still in tact but they refuse to give me the service I paid. Only way to contact them is thru a live chat. I started copying my chats because they were “working” on my service for months & refusing to return any money. Do not buy this crap. After they left me with absolutely no phone service I bought Vonage & haven’t had a problem in the past 4-5 months. I tell everyone I come into contact with about the problems this thing has cost me. It’s not worth the savings. I could barely make a call with it when I did have it. No one could hear me or I couldn’t hear them. Sometimes they would hear bits & pieces of my words. It constantly dropped calls & had a crackling sound all the time even when it was just a dial tone. I’d rather bend over & let the phone company have at me then to ever talk on one of those things again.

The sound could be a little clearer, but considering I am paying $20 a year and no longer paying OVER $45 a month I am very pleased !

Used it for a year. Worked most of the time but started to have problems with phone quality, ie. could not hear the caller or the caller could not hear me. Drop outs and long periods of loss of service problems finally did it for my wife and she insisted on dropping Magic Jack.
So I switched over to ITC and it is much better and does not require a PC running 24/7 to have phone service. Just be sure to read the fine print before signing up to any internet based phone service.

I bought 3 of these units and installed one at home. The product worked well for 3-4 days before the cycle began. Most of the time, the handset is unable to call or reecive calls. The customer service is ancient, a lot of hold time and no atual person to answer a question. The live chat allows you to get a person but they appear to be youg and out of touch with resolving your issues. One time it took me 90 minutes and with no success. Inconclusion, it is a good product at a great price if you get it to work right. And getting it to work right is where I am having all of my problems.
