Does Frontline Plus Really Work?

Frontline Plus is a tick and flea control product that claims to be suitable for cats and dogs. The product contains active ingredients of fipronil, a potent but slow acting insecticide, and S-Metroprene, a growth inhibitor that prevents flea eggs and larvae from developing into adult. It’s said that if applied right a single application of Frontline Plus is enough to last 30 days due to the fact that the product would go into the sebaceous glands and naturally surface from time to time. Available in dog and cat formulas, Frontline Plus is soluble in oil, and claims to offer waterproof protection without any real damage to its effectiveness after a swim.

Yes - 10 years of no fleas

i have been using Frontline Plus on my dog and cat for 10 years. I have never seen a flea on either one of them. Ticks do bite (in fact my dog got lime disease this summer) but they don’t hook on and do die. Overall … a great product!

I have a jack Russell and it just doesn’t work. He still gets ticks and fleas. I’d rather just take him to vet to get the pill.

Yes - NO, its awful.

Frontline is horrible. I have always used Advantage on my cats and dogs and my vet was out, so they recommmened frontline plus. I bought 8 cat doses and 8 dog doses, spent a fortune on all of this and it did nothing for my cats and dogs. I actually think it made them scratch worse.
Now I have 4 dogs and 4 cats that are suffering because I can’t use another product on them for 3 weeks or I will over dose them with flea meds. It’s a shame that they still sell this product and that vets actually recommend it. They seriously need to rethink what ever is in this and everyone take my advice, use Advantage by Bayer. It is so good. It kills mites, chewing lice, fleas and ticks. [……]

Just lost my 3 month old puppy One-One to a paralysis tic. I was using Frontline Plus for his protection. He must have got the tic on about day eleven of the two week dosage period. I am devastated by his loss. About a month earlier I removed a tic from my older dog who was also ‘protected’ by Frontline plus. Ric

No - Works for ticks but not fleas

I used Frontline Plus for 10+ years for fleas and ticks. About 2 years ago it stopped working for fleas. My pugs would be eat up with fleas. However, I haven’t seen a tick on them and I know that we have ticks because they have gotten on me. So if you need a product to fight ticks… Frontline Plus is it. If you want a product to fight fleas, this is not the product to buy.

No - Satisfaction guarantee

I have used Frontline for 15+ years and never even saw a flea. This year I’ve spent over $400 on Frontline and I am still having flea problems. It is being applied correctly on all 5 dogs. I have wood floors. I wash dog bedding, couch and human bedding at every treatment of Frontline. My chocolate lab mix is overridden with flea bites. I called Meril for the satisfaction guarantee and all they can say is there must be eggs in my yard and the fleas jump on my indoor dogs during their potty breaks. So the fact is you can still have fleas in your house, on your dog and family members even after you use Frontline. I want a flea free home if I’m spending hundreds of dollars on a product. They also want you to save all of your receipts for 4 months. Why even offer the satisfaction guarantee? They do not honor it and will try everything to get around it.

Yes - Works well, but doesnt prevent bites

We use this regularly on our dogs and cat, and have never had a problem with fleas in the house. Although fleas or ticks that bite will eventually die, the thing I dont like is that they DO bite. I’ve seen ticks on my dogs, but in a day or two they drop off dead. That’s only happened once or twice, but I dont think this prevents anything from biting, just sticking around or multiplying. I’ve also used this on rescue dogs that were infested with ticks and within a couple days they were tick free. Doesnt smell as bad as Promeris either, so I stick with this because I know it works.
